How to Price Items for Resale (Poshmark, Mercari, eBay)

Pricing is where most new resellers lose money. They copy the highest price they see, nothing sells, and they give up. Here is the method I use.
1. Sold prices are the truth
A listed price is what a seller hopes to get. A sold price is what a buyer actually paid. On eBay, turn on the "Sold items" filter. On Poshmark and Mercari, filter for sold listings. Look at several recent sales of the same brand, style and condition.
2. List between sold and listed
If similar items sold around $20 and active listings sit at $35, list in between, around $26 to $28. That leaves room for offers and bundle discounts while staying close to what buyers really pay.
3. Use the 3x rule before you buy
Only buy an item if it can sell for at least 3 times what you pay. Paid $5? It should realistically sell for $15 or more. The gap covers platform fees, shipping supplies, your time, and the items that never sell.
4. Count your time
Price by the item's value and your time. A $6 item that takes 30 minutes to clean, photograph, list and ship is rarely worth it. Focus on items where one listing pays you well.
5. Research with apps before you buy
Check eBay, Amazon and thrift-scanning apps in the store before you pay. Never buy on a feeling.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use sold or listed prices to price my items?
Use sold prices. Listed prices show what sellers hope for; sold prices show what buyers actually paid.
What is the 3x rule in reselling?
Only buy an item if it can realistically sell for at least three times what you paid, so fees, shipping, time and unsold items are covered.
How do I leave room for offers?
List between the recent sold price and the current listed prices, so you can accept a reasonable offer and still make your target.
